Technology Committee FAQs

Your Microsoft Word is not working appropriately and you need help. Who do you call?

Call the Library. Daneen will help you if she can. If she is unavailable, another staff member will try to help. If the problem is still unresolved, call the IS help desk.

When can I expect a compilation of the FAQs? Where should this be located for faculty to access it?

A paper copy of the FAQs will be added to your faculty packet at the beginning of the 2006-2007 academic year. This will be posted electronically on NurseNet. (For the time being.)

Where is the indicator light on my projector that shows that the bulb is reaching its life expectancy?

This information is for the Dell 4100MP Projector found in all classrooms except 361.

The indicator light may only show that there is a defect.

Number 1 is the Control Panel

Number 2 is the LCD Display

LCD Display Messages are important to pay attention to.

If the following message is displayed, please contact the library to obtain the back up projector, and report the message displayed to initiate bulb replacement.

Lamp is approaching the end of its useful life in full power operation.  Replacement suggested!

This is section 1-Control Panel from the Main Unit.

Number 10 is the Lamp Warning light.  It is labeled Lamp on the projector.

If the light is solid orange and the LCD display indicates that the lap is defective, replace the lamp.

Please contact the library to obtain the back up projector and report the indicator light that is displayed to initiate bulb replacement.

When the lamp reaches its end of life, it may burn out and may make a loud popping sound.  If this occurs, the projector will not turn back on, and will display Lamp Failure in the LCD display.    Please report any such occurrence to the library.

I found that the lamp is generally rated at 1,500 hours with the possibility of 2,000 hours.

To display lamp operating hours.

Go to menu – Select Management and the Lamp Hour is the fourth item down.

The bulb is burnt out on your projector, what do you do?

Since it is not cost efficient to keep spare LCD bulbs in stock, due to expense, longevity and warranty limits, a backup cart with projector and laptop will be available to circulate from the library, if it is needed. Most projectors should have an indicator light to let the user know when a bulb is almost expended. When a classroom bulb burns out in a Dell projector, the faculty member should contact the information support (IS) help desk for assistance (5555). When a classroom bulb burns out in a Sony projector, or when there is no one from IS available for immediate help, the faculty member can contact the library to borrow the circulating projector cart. The faculty member should then contact the office manager to order a replacement. The office manager will order the bulb through IS from the SON budget. The replacement bulbs can arrive within days of ordering. If the bulb from the library projector burns out, whoever is using it should contact the IS help desk for a replacement projector and then contact the library so that a new bulb can be ordered through IS and billed to the library supplies budget line. IS will physically replace all projector bulbs.

How do I conserve my color ink on my desk top printer?

Note: IS will not give support to any of the Deskjet printers. IS would be glad to give support to any of the laser printers; including the new color printers located in the office and the library. If you need to print in color it is preferred that you send the print job to the office printer called “

What exactly does this committee do?

The purpose of the SON Technology Committee is to promote the appropriate integration of technology into areas of instruction, support services and school administration.

The functions:

  1. Develop a comprehensive technology plan for the School of Nursing.
  2. Evaluate the technology needs of the students, faculty and staff of the School of Nursing annually.
  3. Develop technology goals for the School of Nursing.
  4. Coordinate technology needs between the School of Nursing faculty, staff, and students and the Information Services department.

Examples of some of the things the committee has done in the past include:

  • Investigate other school and library technology plans to get an idea of what we need
  • Develop a plan including mission and function statement, a history and assessment of the technology in the SON and an annual goals statement
  • Review the annual SON budget survey for technology requests and develop a plan to meet faculty, staff and student needs
  • Develop procedures for handling technology issues and determine who is responsible for resolving them
  • Assess faculty needs and desires for educational technology
  • Solve specific problems regarding technology in the school
  • Our last agenda included compiling a list of summer tasks to have the classrooms ready for the faculty when they return for the new school year, discussing the results of the faculty in-service, revision of the 2006-2007 technology goals, discussing the results of the recent faculty survey and developing processes to address concerns, problems, issues and procedures regarding the Sim Man, and reviewing progress on the creation of an electronic scheduling program.

How do I access my e-mail contact list from my house via the internet?

You can’t access your personal contacts via web mail. You can access the hospital contacts but it works a bit different. When you compose a new message and select the ‘To’ button a search box will pop up. Enter the name (first or last) of the person you want to email and select ‘Find’. A list of all those with your entered criteria will appear and you can highlight the appropriate one and select ‘To’ or ‘CC’ or ‘BCC’.

How can I make Meditech and Outlook show up in the same place?

This is not being done currently but may be available in the future.

How can I save e-mails into a special place so it is not cluttering up my Outlook program?

You can create a new folder by right-clicking on your mailbox and selecting ‘new folder’. Name the folder whatever you want (i.e. ‘IS Docs’). When you have an email you want to move to that folder just right-click that email and select ‘move to folder…’ A box will popup allowing you to select a folder after which, you must select ‘OK’. This feature can be automated (i.e. automatically moving emails from certain senders to a certain folder when it is received) by using the “Rules” feature in Outlook.

Could IS leave a card behind when they work on my equipment, if I am not here?

Yes, in the future, IS will be leaving business cards behind if they have to work on a piece of equipment without the primary user present. Remember, IS attempts to schedule repair work so that the person who can describe the problem is present.

Will Blackboard be available for all classes?

Yes. Blackboard costs approximately $495 per year, therefore a “purchase for items over $300” form needs to be completed and submitted to the technology committee. This form will be found in the Faculty Handbook.  Another item that would help the utilization of Blackboard would depend if the course is set-up on power point and if there is a plan to make the course web interactive.

What is the future of technology in the School of Nursing?

The use of technology will continue to increase in all areas of the School. Our technology plan supports the vision and goals of the School and the Technology Committee provides the framework developing technology to enhance educational and service activities. Our limitations for future projects could be institutional size and, to some extent, financial support. We may need to do some creative thinking about the funding of expensive projects. State and Federal money have been appropriated to help schools of nursing increase enrollments.
